The Biological Weapons Convention
The Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (BWC) became the first international treaty on disarmament, banning the production of an entire category of weapons. The Convention was opened for signature in April, 1972 and entered into force in March, 1975. Currently it has 165 member States that have committed not to develop, produce or stockpile biological weapons. Kazakhstan ratified the Convention in May, 2007.
